Let's embark on a journey on a historical tram, or rather a 'šalina', through the city districts of Brno. The book 'Streets of Brno Against the Flow of Time' is not an academic work; it is essentially a guide. Or motivation. Because how else would you get to know a city than by walking through it? However, Brno has an abundance of various guidebooks, tour guides, and other walking aids, which is why this book was created. We will not just walk through Brno; we will ride through it on a tram. The tram is typical for Brno; old and the newest photographs cannot do without it, and every day we use it to get to schools, jobs, dates, or cultural events. The tram has a firm place in our lives and hearts. Many of us read during our daily commutes, but some look out the windows. And they see the everyday transformations of their city. And that is what Petr Fiala's book is about. About the vanished and vanishing city, about the stories that history and its inhabitants have inscribed into it. Together with the author, we will travel the routes from the oldest, dating back to the late 19th century, through lines from the time of Nazi occupation, and we will disembark at the terminus of pure present.
