Description

This unique book about rum takes readers from sugar cane to tasting. Like wine or whisky, rum deserves noble words: its exceptional aroma and delicate taste make this remarkable nectar suitable for tasting like fine wine. And despite what many people think, the Caribbean is not its only home. From the Caribbean through Latin America and Europe to Japan, the authors take readers on an adventurous journey to discover the greatest brands, both famous and lesser-known, and open the doors of distilleries using every kind of production method, from traditional to the most modern. The aroma of this exceptional drink develops best in small tulip-shaped glasses on short stems, similar to those used for sherry in Spain. There are around 16,000 different kinds of rum in the world, with limitless variety in their flavors, but only two main varieties: rum made from molasses, the residue of sugar-cane processing, and rum made from fresh cane juice. The former is generally sweeter and heavier, with aromas often reminiscent of raisins, chocolate, caramel or overripe bananas, while the latter is fresher, gentler and distinctly characterful. Rum is also regarded as a drink of pirates. Apart from the film character Jack Sparrow, the best-known was undoubtedly Henry Morgan, whose name was given to the Captain Morgan rum familiar in the Czech Republic. Readers can now set out on a journey around the world with a glass in one hand and this book in the other, discovering Havana Club from Cuba, Doorly’s from Barbados, Angostura from Trinidad, Appleton from Jamaica, Centenario from Costa Rica and Diplomático from Venezuela. The book is in Czech.
