Menhirs are artificially erected stones and one of the manifestations of the so-called megalithic culture. Some researchers see them as cult sites, others as prehistoric astronomical observatories and calendars, while others regard them as places of concentration of exceptionally strong 'earth energy.' There are even opinions that they are indirect evidence of ancient contacts with extraterrestrial civilizations. Probably everyone knows the English Stonehenge, but erected stones—whether isolated, in groups, or as part of megalithic structures—can be found on all continents except Antarctica. The most famous and lesser-known locations from Europe, America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania are presented in the first part of the book. There are also several erected stones in the Czech lands, which some researchers classify as prehistoric menhirs.
