Description
This Czech-language history examines the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665–1667, when the Dutch still dominated maritime trade while England sought to challenge the supremacy of the United Provinces. After the first conflict with the Dutch ended in London’s favour, commercial rivalry in West Africa continued to heighten tensions. King Charles II hoped a new war would strengthen his position at home, while London merchants wanted to drive their Dutch competitors from the sea routes. Instead, England suffered bloody defeats, the country was devastated by plague, London was ravaged by fire, and the navy endured one of the greatest humiliations in its history.
