Description
Mutual brutality based on religious differences and countless smaller and larger clashes on land and at sea were characteristic manifestations of the bloody war between the Greeks and the Turks in the 1820s – a war that led to the establishment of an independent Greek state. It was accompanied by other phenomena, such as Greek squandering of foreign loans and civil wars among the Greeks themselves. A negative role was also played by one-sided propaganda in Western European society, stemming from ignorance of the actual situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the military and diplomatic interference of European powers. Although 180 years have passed since the end of that war, it has not lost its historical significance and relevance. The animosity between Greeks and Turks is still alive, and the socio-economic reality of Greece today, caused by wastefulness, runs like a red thread through Greek history since this war, which is a significant chapter in modern European history. It resembles both an ancient tragedy and an absurd drama.
