Description
This work of narrative history vividly recounts the battles of Aspern and Essling and Wagram, fought against Austria by Napoleon I and Archduke Charles of Austria in late spring and summer 1809. At Aspern and Essling, the myth of Napoleon’s invincibility was shattered, while Wagram did not end in a convincing French victory. The relatively forgotten events of the Danube campaign nevertheless marked the French emperor’s last victorious campaign. Drawing on numerous maps, period illustrations and orders of battle showing the formations of both armies, the book gives the leading voice to eyewitnesses, marshals, generals, officers and soldiers on both the Austrian and French sides who experienced the bloody struggle on the battlefields along the left bank of the Danube.
