Description

Miloš Sum entered the Great War in the summer of 1915 as part of the Olomouc Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 13 and was captured by the Russians a year later. Count Józef Potocki selected him as a trained pastry chef for the kitchen of his estate in Antoniny, but in July 1917, Sum voluntarily joined the Czechoslovak army. He was assigned to the new 7th Czechoslovak Rifle Regiment 'Tatranský', with which he endured fierce battles against the Bolsheviks in 1918. However, his diary primarily captures the years 1919 and 2020, detailing the guarding of the Trans-Siberian Railway and his return home via Canada. The author depicts the harsh life in Siberia, conflicts with military and political leadership, homesickness, as well as the lives of ordinary Russians and other peoples of the Far East. Miloš Sum was culturally active, contributing to the publication of an illustrated magazine, performing as the lead in female roles in the regimental theater, and often painting. Nearly 150 of his period drawings accompany the diary.
