Description
This Czech-language historical account examines the First Opium War of 1839–1842. Britain’s main export from China was tea, paid for in silver, and merchants sought a commodity that could correct the resulting imbalance in trade. Opium filled that role, while the imperial government gradually attempted to stop its import. Measures introduced in the late 1830s brought the situation to a head, and the first shots were fired in September 1839. Britain fought to legalise the opium trade, open Chinese ports and expand diplomatic relations. Its military superiority was confirmed by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, under which Britain also acquired Hong Kong.
