Description
This Czech-language book follows the author’s personal efforts to find the last witnesses of the extermination camps Treblinka and Sobibor. It is based on his many years of Holocaust research, which began in 2000 with a visit to the Treblinka memorial. There he realized how little attention the history of this apparently most significant camp had received in the Czech context. Working with a limited body of sources, he discovered that only two Czechs survived Treblinka. To his disappointment, the last of them had taken his own life in 1997. His written memories of Treblinka nevertheless helped reveal the subtle circumstances surrounding not only the history of Treblinka but also that of the related Sobibor camp, from which only one Czech survived. Both camps were marked by an immense mortality rate.
