Description
When the Czechoslovak forces in Russia began withdrawing from the anti-Bolshevik fronts at the turn of 1918 and 1919, the soldiers expected to be travelling home soon. Instead, they faced long and exhausting months of a small but all the bloodier war for control of the vital Trans-Siberian Railway. This historical account examines not only military operations along the railway but also the decline of morale in the army, including the “Czechoslovak uprising” in Irkutsk in spring 1919, when a civil war between the legionnaires was narrowly avoided. It also describes the harsh daily life in the Siberian taiga and the first sea transports back home. For most legionnaires, however, 1919 was not their final year in Russia, as many did not return home until a year later. The contents are in Czech.
