Description
The Caucasus Ridge, located on the edge of the Ottoman Empire and Persia, gained significant strategic importance at the end of the 18th century when Russian territorial expansion reached this area. The Tsarist army aimed to occupy as much territory as possible belonging to its southern neighbors and needed to ensure safe passage through the mountain passes. It took nearly a hundred years for the Russian troops, relying on numerical superiority and advanced weaponry, to overcome the resistance of the local inhabitants, who relied on natural conditions, heroism, and determination to live according to the traditions of their ancestors. However, the Caucasus never became a peaceful, integrated part of the Russian Empire, and its conquest, consisting of a series of campaigns and many battles, remains a subject of biased discussions and conflicting interpretations to this day.
