Description
Drawing on thousands of pages of surviving archival material, this historical study explores the lives of Czech and Slovak prisoners in Russia during the First World War and the unique emergence of prisoner-of-war organizations. The war produced such vast numbers of military and civilian prisoners, estimated at seven to ten million, that it fundamentally changed the traditional understanding of captivity, which had long been common but secondary in global conflicts. The organizations gradually became the only source of volunteers for the growing Czechoslovak army in Russia. The book traces the institutional development of solutions to the question of Czech prisoners in Russia and also presents numerous stories from individual prisoner camps.
