Nevyhlášená válka - Boj o Slovensko 1918-1920 – Tomášek Dušan (2018)

This Czech-language historical nonfiction book examines the undeclared war fought over Slovakia from November 1918 to early 1920, immediately after the First World War. After the victorious powers divided the Austro-Hungarian Empire into several states, Czechoslovakia was formed by joining Slovakia with the historic lands of the Crown of Bohemia. Hungary, however, refused to surrender the territory it had occupied for centuries. The fighting involved the Hungarian Red Army, Czechoslovak legions and hundreds of soldiers who were killed, while many thousands were wounded or reported missing. Light and heavy weapons, armoured trains and aircraft were deployed. Although historians rightly regard the struggle for Slovakia as a war, it was long little known because the former regime suppressed information about it: Czechoslovak volunteers had fought against the Bolsheviks. Dušan Tomášek’s book explores this neglected chapter of recent history and includes period photographs, archival documents, battle maps, a detailed chronology, commanders’ orders and profiles of the main participants.
