Description
The second volume of Otakar Husák's memoirs begins with the departure of the transport of Czechoslovak volunteers from Archangel to the west and a two-week stop at the English camp Flowerdown, where they were warmly welcomed. Upon arriving in France, they were met with the image of a war-weary country, which, however, they managed to win over with their diligence and morale after initial distrust. This is followed by a description of the complex formation of the Czechoslovak army in France, which culminated in a ceremonial oath in Darney and was sealed in blood during the summer battles in Alsace, particularly at Terron and Vouziers in October 1918. In November, O. Husák was appointed commander of the first mission to the republic, and upon his arrival in Prague, President Masaryk chose him as the head of his military office. Thus, he participated in the building of the state and army, addressing national and social issues, and defending the republic against expansionist neighbors in 1919. The author encountered a number of significant domestic and foreign personalities, whose fates and roles in the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia he mentions in his work. Co-edited with the Czechoslovak Legionary Community.
