Description
The battle fought on July 15, 1410, at Grunwald was one of the largest knightly confrontations of medieval Europe. It took place during the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Union, led by King Vladislav II Jagiello, and the Order of the Teutonic Knights. In this "Great War," as contemporary chroniclers called it, the Polish troops and their allies ended the expansionist policy of the Order in northeastern Europe. The entire Great War against the Crusaders took place from 1409 to 1411 and had several key stages and dramatic events, in addition to the battle at Grunwald. Alongside the main figures, Vladislav II Jagiello, the Polish king, and Vytautas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, readers will also find the fates of other politicians, military leaders, and grand masters. The author pays special attention to the Order of the Teutonic Knights in Prussia and the internal development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. With a sense of perspective, he evaluates the fateful defeat of the Crusaders and the glorious victor of Grunwald. In 2010, Poland celebrated the 600th anniversary of the event that became almost a symbolic milestone in national history. The victory at Grunwald still evokes emotions and has often been politically exploited in the past. Let us take a closer look at this dramatic event, which saw warriors from many countries participating in large numbers on both sides...
