Description
Readers are presented with six studies by Herbert Marcuse, now in Czech translation, the oldest of which, New Sources for the Foundation of Historical Materialism, dates back to 1932, while the youngest, Repressive Tolerance, was written in 1965 but significantly expanded in 1968. The texts represent various phases of the intellectual development of one of the most prominent figures of the first generation of critical theory. They reflect the changes Marcuse underwent in response to a rapidly changing world and what he remained true to: a concern for freedom and happiness that cannot exist without each other; a concern for freedom and happiness that arises from the genuine solidarity of the human race and cannot and must not coexist with the misery and suffering of anyone else.
