The book deals with the dramatic events on the European continent from the fall of Napoleon to the revolution of 1830. This period was marked by the conclusions of the Congress of Vienna, which decided to adjust European relations, restore thrones to the monarchs expelled by revolutions and Napoleon, and guarantee peace in Europe. The guarantee of this order was, in most countries, police regimes controlling any expressions of opposition. Therefore, opposition had to hide in illegality and chose the path of secret societies, clubs, and sects that aimed to undermine and eliminate the existing regime. Many legends later arose about such societies. One of the most widespread was the revolutionary society of the Carbonari, which originated in Italy. Although European governments and their police apparatus pursued members of revolutionary organizations with harsh punishments (the infamous prison of Špilberk in Brno became notorious, for example), they managed to carry out successful coups in several countries and maintain power for shorter or longer periods.
