Description
The scientific and technological progress of the 19th century introduced two revolutionary inventions: the railway and the telegraph, which caused a communication revolution not only in themselves but also by modernizing the centuries-old institution of the post. The Austro-Hungarian army had to begin defining its relationship to them as well. The book uncovers the logistical and communication background of the military conflicts in which the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian armies were involved between 1848 and 1914, while also capturing the penetration of new transport and communication means into the considerations of the highest military authorities of the Habsburg monarchy. The author attempts to break the traditional view of the period not only of the famous victories of Marshal Radetzky (1848-1849) but also of the humanitarian disaster in Northern Italy (1859) and the great defeat of Field Quartermaster Benedek (1866), whose failure was then weakly compensated by the engagement of the Austro-Hungarian army in the Balkans or the ostentation of its regular parades and maneuvers. The narrative concludes on the eve of World War I, with the greatest emphasis placed on the use of the railway.
