Description

Recent terrorist attacks have revived discussions about Belgium as a country of origin for Islamic terrorists and the glaring lethargy of Belgian security forces. However, other dark spots from Belgium's past are also being uncovered: the still-unidentified so-called Brabant killers carried out a series of absurd terrorist attacks in the 1980s, resulting in dozens of victims; there is also the case of the murderer and pedophile Marc Dutroux. Criticism of the investigation at the time pointed directly to the structure of the Belgian administration, which paralyzed itself... The peculiar Belgian state system, the unique mentality of its people, and the heavy shadow lying over the country since the 19th century, when the colony of Belgian Congo was the site of such horrific massacres that they remain taboo in Belgium to this day. All of this persists to this day. The main country of Europe is beautiful, but the shadows over it cannot be dispelled. The author spent several years in Belgium and presents a unique perspective on this country to the Czech reader.
