Description

Anti-communism emerged in the United States almost immediately after the Bolshevik coup in Petrograd in November 1917. It became a phenomenon that marked society, culture, and especially the political scene. Throughout the 20th century, it even transformed into hysteria several times, specifically the so-called 'fear of the reds.' This primarily concerns the period immediately following the end of World War I and then the beginning of the Cold War. A number of personalities are associated with these intense phases, but the most prominent among them was Senator Joe McCarthy, who is often regarded as the embodiment of demagoguery and the arbitrariness of Washington. However, American anti-communism cannot be generalized in this way. Concerns about communist infiltration can often be considered justified, while the involvement of ordinary people in the 'witch hunts' can be seen as limited.
