The actions of individual human beings are something unpredictable – however, the reactions of human crowds can be subjected to statistical processing. The larger the crowd, the greater the accuracy that can be achieved. And the number of human masses with which the Foundation works is equal to the population of all the millions of inhabited worlds. The Seldon Plan lies in ruins – and with it, the empire of the Foundation. Even the equations of the most gifted mathematician of all time were not enough to contend with the Mule, a mutant of unimaginable psychic abilities. Yet all is not lost: somewhere on the other side of the Galaxy lies the Second Foundation, where, despite centuries of barbarism, all of humanity's knowledge was supposed to be preserved.
