Description
Acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, is one of the therapeutic approaches belonging to the so-called third wave of cognitive behavioural therapy, whose main creator is American psychologist Steven C. Hayes. Australian psychologist Russ Harris has made this approach popular by translating its academic and specialist descriptions into clear, practical language. ACT is based on the rather counterintuitive idea that psychological suffering is an unavoidable part of human experience and life, as it is connected with the use of language to describe the past, present and future. It also assumes that this suffering is often intensified and maintained by the entirely understandable effort to avoid it. ACT therapy shows that people can learn to respond to psychological suffering in ways that do not deepen or prolong it, and that life can be full and satisfying even when it includes fear, sadness, depression, worry or anger. The aim of ACT is to teach patients or clients to live a fulfilled life in accordance with their own values. This book explains the means by which ACT achieves this goal.
