Description
There are complex physiological mechanisms for regulating and optimizing tissue oxygenation, but undetected and untreated anemia leads to organ damage and has adverse consequences for the patient. Clinical studies emphasize the paradox that both anemia and transfusions are associated with organ damage and increased morbidity and mortality across a wide range of diseases and surgical procedures. Experience has shown that the implementation of a Patient Blood Management program reduces perioperative blood loss and the need for transfusions, decreases perioperative morbidity and mortality, shortens hospital stays, and reduces treatment costs. A crucial measure appears to be thorough preoperative screening for anemia, its careful diagnosis, and treatment. The application of simple, cost-effective, proven, and easily implementable evidence-based practices will enable every hospital to reduce both the incidence of anemia on the day of surgery and limit the administration of non-indicated transfusions.
