Description
In the eleventh century, Europe has still not fully recovered from the barbarian age. In the North, Christianity is gradually gaining ground at the expense of pagan cults, while the Eastern Roman Empire struggles to withstand raids by Saracens, steppe nomads and Normans. Constantinople, a center of civilization and prosperity, attracts adventurers from the North, who enter the service of the Eastern Roman rulers as mercenaries and form the emperor’s personal guard. They find themselves amid the most sophisticated intrigues of high-ranking officials engaged in a ruthless struggle for control of the empire. Western Europe is once again seeking to establish itself as a power, and the idea of a crusade against the infidels is born. Readers view the dramatic events of bloody conflicts between North and South, and between West and East at the dawn of a new era through the eyes of a series of historical and fictional characters.
