The true story of a young Cambodian woman who managed to challenge the social and cultural norms that still prevail in her country today on her journey through life. Thanks to her courage and tenacity, she became an ambassador for the fight for women's equality. Her story can inspire girls and women from all corners of the world. Thavry grew up in southern Cambodia on a small island surrounded by the Bassac River. She was isolated from many of the advancements of the modern world and surrounded by traditional rituals, opinions, and customs. While Cambodia slowly recovered from the horrors of civil war and the Khmer Rouge dictatorship, life in the countryside began to return to original values and age-old traditions. This reality meant that women married very young, soon became mothers, and worked on family farms. All this without the opportunity to make their own decisions and choose a different life freely and independently. Thavry's parents, whose childhood was shaped by the four-year tyranny of the Khmer Rouge, supported their daughter unconditionally.
