Ethical questions in the field of environmental sciences focus primarily on mathematical models that highlight the "limits to growth." Statistical estimates of population growth, the planet's capacity for food production, environmental pollution, climate change, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of drinking water in these forecasts alarmingly call for a revision of current attitudes, as human activity could lead to the overloading of planet Earth in the near future. The purpose of this book is not to delve deeper into debates over conflicting interpretations of these so-called hard data. This book points to a different starting point for ecological ethics, namely the relationship between humans and the environment and life as such, and how this environment touches upon human spirituality. The goal is to familiarize the humanistically oriented reader with the basic principles and theses of sapiential environmental ethics, in which environmental discourse is placed in the context of revealing the meaning of the universe's creation and life on planet Earth, contemporary spirituality, and ethical challenges within integral ecology, as well as the ethical challenges of the future.
