Description

The story of a child who lost their mother in early childhood – their own story – is told through the language of loss of love and safety that a parent's embrace usually provides in childhood. I will take you into the depths of a wounded child's soul and later that of a teenage girl. My dialogue with my mother – or rather a monologue to her, since a dialogue requires answers that my mother will never give me – runs like a red thread through the book. The desire for dialogue is an expression of adult children's efforts to understand their parents and comprehend their own roots. Very often, people ask me at seminars or author readings: What helped you survive such a childhood? How can we, as adoptive parents or foster parents, help our children? I also work in psychotherapy with adults who were hurt by early abandonment or spent part of their childhood in foster care and ask how they can help themselves. I have added some answers in this second edition and summarized them into short texts for beginning therapists, foster parents, and already adult children who have experienced adoption, foster care, or the loss of a parent.
