Hiding Jews during the Holocaust was deadly dangerous. They were meant to quietly and obediently turn to ash and smoke. Even a small Jewish girl named Ilonka, who tells this story. In simple words and from a child's perspective, she describes hunger, fear, illness, loss of dignity, manhunts, and organized killing. She also describes the ways in which Jews in occupied Poland tried to escape these horrors and survive. Ilonka survived, but most of her relatives did not. She hesitated for a long time to write about it. She does not try to shock. The worst horrors are first hinted at and then revisited several times. Before the readers' eyes, the story of her family gradually emerges. But above all, the fate of a girl who spent the entire war dressed in an oversized coat of a former lemonade factory director and whose greatest treasure was a red thread from a fabric slipper with a sole cut from the Torah boards.
