The author's primary aim is to show that great discoveries do not fall from the sky but are the result of the state of society, from which the inventions of scholars, scientists, or engineers emerge. The reader can thus learn how natural scientists gradually worked their way into the absurd world of infinity, the paradoxical world of relativity, the quantum world of micro-particles, or the surprising world of chaos and turbulence. The text should make it clear that people still need to believe in something; they want their world to be coherent and clear. Often, they fear freedom and, under the influence of ideologies, cease to distinguish between truth and lies, victim and perpetrator, and between freedom and dependency. Each of the nine main chapters contains a brief overview of the general history of the given period. This is followed by an introduction to the development of philosophy, theology, and other humanities, descriptions of scientific discoveries, technical inventions, and a summarizing conclusion.
