The impressive novel is a masterful psychological study of a man who dedicated his life to revenge. The author vividly describes the environment in which the hero grew up, clarifying the reasons why a normal boy developed into a creature in an atmosphere of hatred, repaying all imagined and real grievances in an inhuman way and knowing no mercy, not even for himself. The only being, a woman, capable of making him a normal man, marries his rival and dies under dramatic circumstances. This burns all bridges between the hero and the surrounding world, and the story of fanatical revenge against all members of the beloved woman's family begins. Emily Brontë, the younger sister of Charlotte Brontë, published her only novel in 1847 under the male pseudonym Ellis Bell. A year later, at the age of just thirty, she died.
