My, Ukrajina a Evropa aneb Válka, mír a politika v éře Donalda Trumpa – Weigl Jiří (2026)

This book by Jiří Weigl, director of the Václav Klaus Institute, presents a collection of political commentaries from 2025 concerning the war in Ukraine and the changing nature of international security. The conflict is placed within the geopolitical framework of relations between the United States, Russia and the European Union, while the role of European elites and Czech politics is critically assessed. The texts examine the idea that the war is being used, or rather misused, to accelerate the centralisation of the European Union, weaken national sovereignty and suppress diversity of opinion under the pretext of fighting “pro-Russian propaganda”. The author warns against war hysteria, uncontrolled growth in defence spending and Europe’s economic self-destruction. He points to the West’s missed opportunities after the end of the Cold War and to small states’ illusions about their influence on great-power politics, which is driven primarily by its own interests rather than emotions or declared values. The book critically analyses the belief that security can be guaranteed through unconditional following of great powers and argues that the Czech Republic’s true interest lies in bringing the conflict to a swift end, de-escalating tensions and returning to a realistic policy that defends stability, sovereignty and the country’s long-term interests.
