Description
The result of the British referendum in June 2016 was a strong shock for the European Union. The unthinkable became a reality: for the first time in its history, the Union was set to lose a member state, and moreover, a key one. A series of crises and failures, which had just reached a new peak, provided an urgent impetus to realize that European integration had long been heading in the wrong direction. The bold decision of the British sparked hopes that Brussels would change. A number of commentators suddenly called for deep reforms, a return of powers to member states, a loosening of the straitjacket, and an end to the grandiose arrogance of EU officials. A transition to multi-speed integration was predicted, a slimming down of the Union's scope to the internal market and closely related areas, a departure from the centralist line, as well as ambitions to create a common state entity and a European people... For three years, a significant discussion took place about the future of the narrowed EU-27. Now it is time to look back at its course and analyze its results. This is precisely what the book "The Union in the Shadow of Brexit" is about.
