Jak voní můj domov – Větvička Václav (2018)

What does home smell like? One might want to answer Sunday beef with creamy sauce. Or perhaps a bundt cake or Christmas cookies? The longer we think, the more impressions begin to come to mind. Sometimes it smells like a frosty night and crunching snow underfoot, other times like a hot pine forest in the middle of summer, damp autumn leaves while raking the garden, or the fresh spring wind rustling through the branches. What home smells like to Václav Větvička, a patient and attentive traveler through the Czech and Slovak lands, was shared with listeners of Good Morning on the Dvojka station of Czech Radio 2 – and now readers will learn about it on the pages of this book. It certainly smells like railways and the author's beloved little trains, but also like roads and paths, the waters of the Třeboň ponds, the Cidlina River, or the Hamerský stream. And it will definitely touch on those Christmas and Easter scents – although Christmas may smell primarily of regular departures to the mountains, and Easter of stories about willow branches, from which one can or cannot weave Easter whips. Speaking of home and the Czech and Slovak homeland: One chapter is dedicated to them – on the occasion of the uncelebrated 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia, as the author himself says.
