Description
This Czech-language book brings together essays and studies that Carl Gustav Jung wrote during the interwar period and after the Second World War. Its central themes begin with On the Unconscious, which considers characteristic events of the period and the relationship between the individual and society. Jung argues that patients’ dreams and fantasies can reflect the unconscious life of nations, just as social and political upheavals can, describing these as psychic epidemics. In Soul and Earth, he examines the connection between the individual and the primordial community through the concept of participation mystique, introduced by the anthropologist and philosopher L. Lévy-Bruhl. The famous 1936 essay Wotan explores the connection between National Socialism and unconscious instinctual forces symbolized by the archetypal figure of the Norse god. Woman in Europe considers social phenomena arising from changes in the soul of modern humanity. Two longer works from the 1950s, The Present and the Future and A Modern Myth: Things Seen in the Sky, address the development of the individual, UFO phenomena and the crisis of civilization. Jung also examines conscience, morality, and the relationship between good and evil.
