Description

The Young Sufferer is the first volume of a cycle named after its central character, Lelian, an apocryphal autobiography of the French poet Paul Verlaine. Against the background of an extensive historical panorama, documentary material intertwines with fiction, while characters resurrected from archival dust move naturally through the story, completed by the author’s imagination. The book follows Lelian’s childhood and youth as a shy, insecure boy raised under the influence of his excessively devoted, pious mother and an indifferent father disappointed by his son’s frail constitution, which makes him unsuitable for the military career chosen for him. It portrays his school years, first homosexual and heterosexual experiences, early literary efforts and first encounters with Parisian literary circles, while also conveying the insidious presence of death. This is not a story with a happy ending, but one of a harsh fate that leaves a deep impression on the reader’s memory.
