When I returned from France to the Czech Republic at the end of summer in 1969, I sensed that I was returning to uncertainties. But I also knew that I could only write in Czech, and I wanted to write. Writing was my only option at that time; there was no hope for publication. It was only through samizdat that I was thrown a lifeline, and writing gained a deeper meaning. Even today, when literature seemingly faces no obstacles, when it has entered the free book market, I do not consider myself a 'professional' author. I write to justify my existence, nothing more, to convey a message, to extend a hand to the reader... I cultivate transitional genres - applied lyricism, essays, I write travelogues, monographs, literary and artistic commentaries, and I also create short prose. I seek connections, a balance between knowledge and personal experience...
