Description
Two equally talented actors compete for the title role in the upcoming production of the famous Rostand's Cyrano. They showcase their talent, memory, and knowledge to the theater director, who is both an arbiter of elegance and a voyeur. The dispute over the interpretation of the character Cyrano escalates into a debate about theater itself. Classic or postmodern? A proven translation or the risk of something new, 'modern'? Possible text modifications - but to what extent? Keep repeating the same thing over and over? - But can we go against the author, even if we have a different opinion and knowledge than he did in his time? But then, why not just write our own play? And the problems pile up: there is not only general taste but above all the box office... Both actors present different translations of the same passages, quote from the writings of the real Cyrano, and present historical facts... The director is in a dilemma. The end of the audition will likely be unclear - perhaps they will alternate, perhaps the Director himself, an unrecognized author, will try to connect both - but won't it be a dog's breakfast...? The play is not only about Cyrano but about theater in general; ultimately, it is also about the unjustly despised - and yet generally unknown - philosophy of the madmen of the Royal Art.
