Description
Oblomov is an extraordinary story of love and at the same time a psychological drama of a noble landowner, whose family upbringing in a backward serf village instilled in him a resistance to any real activity and condemned him to a deadly lethargy of will. Goncharov, in this his supreme novel, provides a perfect diagnosis of the volitional, intellectual, and emotional malaise of the central hero, who is a typical example of the 'superfluous man' in 19th-century Russian literature. In contrast, the character of Olga is among the most beautiful and artistically perfect female heroines of the Russian novel. Oblomov is also a man who lives in the moment. He is kind, tolerant, playful, and imaginative. He is both shallow and deep at the same time.
