Description

With a foreword by Karel Schwarzenberg, Prague at the twilight of the monarchy still breathes the majesty of old times, but is already transforming into a modern metropolis. Wide boulevards are being built where the Jewish quarter once stood, modern bridges arch between the two banks, and the first steam train from Vienna arrives at the station. While not long ago the emperor strolled here with his guard, soon the proclamation of the republic will take place, and the Marian column in the Old Town Square will be smashed to the pavement with a loud crash. These and other pivotal moments, as well as the everyday lives of ordinary Praguers, are captured in remarkable photographs presented in this book. More than 140 images have been selected, edited, and supplemented with texts by photographer and owner of a family collection of old photographs Pavel Scheufler. The book is not only a valuable testimony to the transformation of our capital city but also a guide on how to read photographs in such a way that we can hear the captivating stories they tell us. It is also published in English and German versions.
