Description
The new book by Michael Haag describes the rise of the Templars and their downfall against the backdrop of the ideal of crusader life and their plans for settling the Holy Land. The territory that Europeans called Outremer ('beyond the sea') remained predominantly inhabited by Christians even after four centuries of Muslim rule, with whom the Franks intermarried and created a distinct civilization. It is a story in which it is clear from the start that everything will go wrong. The horror and fascination lie in how the final downfall occurred and how immense the subsequent loss was.
