Výrostek – Dostojevskij Fjodor Michajlovič (2019)

Many lovers of Dostoevsky consider The Adolescent to be his best work. The author's genius speaks with incredible conviction and openness through the voice of the narrator - the main character, the outcast illegitimate son of Arkady Dolgoruky, who disarmingly honestly refers to himself as a 'youth' and can critically observe his surroundings as well. He is a young man full of contradictions - sensitive yet confused in his feelings, naive yet distrustful, on one hand sincere, a romantic dreamer longing for truth and goodness even at the cost of self-sacrifice, and on the other hand a 'subterranean' person, humiliated and ridiculed, self-destructive and self-loathing, yearning for revenge. His heavy and prolonged struggle for self resembles a game of merciless roulette. Will he manage to prevail after all the tumultuous and extraordinary twists?
