Description
The memories of a retired professional soldier tell the story of one year in the life of a young corporal at the turn of 1959/1960, who serves in a technical role in the automotive service at a military school. He recalls his summer loves and friendships, a Christmas journey to his parents, a challenging hiking expedition with a school colleague, and the ceremonial graduation of one class. It is a humorous yet often almost romantic narrative of an ordinary person who does not concern himself with the political context of the time but occasionally surprises with his contemplations on simple yet significant aspects of life, the beauty of nature, and interpersonal relationships. The author's language intertwines a period mix of dialects, Czech, and Slovak, which were so typical of the military environment of those times, and the author also reflects on his strong relationship with literature, especially the interwar Raisian novels about ordinary people from the Czech countryside.
