Description

This Czech translation presents the second volume of François Rabelais’s five-part novel cycle, first published in 1534. The giant Gargantua, the future father of Pantagruel, emerges from his mother’s left ear after an eleven-month pregnancy and immediately demands a drink. Compared with Pantagruel, Gargantua is more mature and didactic, while retaining the wit, obsession with food and scatological humour associated with the giant. In its extraordinary generic variety, this original work of world literature offers reflections on language, mocks the rigid ponderousness of university learning and, above all, displays the carefree boldness with which Rabelais breaks every established rule of fiction and narration. The edition follows the order in which the books were written and uses Patrik Ouředník’s translation. It also includes a commentary by Leo Spitzer on Rabelais’s position between the learned world of antiquity and the practical world of everyday life, and on the stylistic variability arising from this uncertainty.
