Description
Motýl's prose at U Terflerů resembles, for example, Jaroslav Hašek's History of Mild Progress Within the Bounds of the Law or Pavel Řezníček's Stars of Kvelb. It is a text depicting events in the literary society, primarily what took place when the participants of the memories gathered in pub rooms. Specifically, at Motýl's in the pub U Terflerů in Prague's Smíchov. Just like with Hašek and Řezníček, Motýl's recollections are only partially real, and there are no limits to mystification, exaggeration, and fantasy here. Motýl's characters are partially marked by pseudonyms or are entirely fictional, while some are left with their real names, and it is with these characters that Motýl adheres more closely to reality. The text is humorous, and laughter and pub stories are its cornerstones. The entire prose can be viewed only from the perspective of carnival culture and as a picture of the now-vanished world of Czech pubs as a unique folk environment. However, the text can also be read as a metaphor for the situation in Czech society in the 1910s.
