Description
The autobiographical novel recounts Cavann's experiences during World War II: the capitulation of France and the subsequent German occupation of the north of the country, the exodus of a large part of the population, and black market activities. The narrator is sent to forced labor in Berlin, where he meets a Ukrainian woman named Maria, who becomes his great love. During the liberation of Germany, they both move to Szczecin, but are captured by Soviet soldiers. They watch in horror as mass executions of German civilians take place. The narrator loses contact with Maria and then spends several weeks searching for her in vain. The final testimony about the mass relocation of Nazi leaders to the West sounds terrifying... For the memoir on the post-war period, Les Ruskoffs (The Russians), he received the Interrallié literary prize.
