Description
On the western edge of the Highlands, in the Iron Mountains, summer begins. Three friends who grew up here grapple with their problems in a languid timelessness that seemingly leads to no resolution. They face advancing alcohol addiction, difficulties with women and the law, an inability to say goodbye to their teenage children, and essentially an inability to grow up. But old institutions of rural life are also in jeopardy: the former agricultural cooperative and the dying evangelical congregation, which is now just a reminder of the ancient traditions of their ancestors for the three friends. The main character, Jan Chlumecký, tries to do something about it all, but he is also overtaken by fears that the old world is fading away and he cannot prevent it.
