Description
The son of a Soviet writer receives the manuscript of his father's last work. In it, Ivan Ivak describes his own creative journey and the events that preceded it: the experiences of a teenage boy from a poor Kyiv neighborhood after the arrival of the Germans, as well as his subsequent profession as an executioner in the Soviet authorities. Ivak worked as a death penalty executor in the late 1940s, and it was only a meeting with a supernatural phenomenon, which he was forbidden to speak about his entire life, that compelled him to step in a completely different direction...
The novel by contemporary Ukrainian author Yevheniya Kononenko, The Executioner's Last Wish, tells the autobiography of an old writer but also follows the reactions of his descendants to their father's confession. Against the backdrop of one family's story, the book depicts the modern history of Kyiv, the "City of Gloomy Houses" – significant historical twists and the lives of ordinary people.
