Bronislaw Wildstein's novels are not unknown to Czech readers, thanks to the translation of the title The Valley of Nothingness (2008, Czech Pulchra, 2010), a story of a journalist trying to untangle a web of betrayals and intrigues in post-communist Poland. In 2011, another opus followed, The Unfinished Time. It is not the author's latest novel – two more were published after it in 2012 and 2016 (The Hidden and The House of the Chosen). However, in terms of narrative and historical-philosophical scope, The Unfinished Time represents Wildstein's most ambitious work to date. This saga of the Brok family begins with a pogrom, thus it is a story of several 'orphaned' generations, a historical, intellectual, and also a criminal adventure of the descendants of a rabbi who still 'spoke with God.' It takes place after 'the sky has withdrawn from view' and 'bad times have come,' when solutions are offered by Freud's teachings, Lenin's writings, Heidegger's philosophy, both totalitarian regimes of the 20th century promising them.
