The story takes place in an unspecified future, during a time of relative social consolidation that followed a period of terrorism and associated right-wing populism. Fully unified Europe is divided into individual regions with closed internal borders, the security apparatus has been strengthened, and key religious texts have been banned. Only two regions escape control – the Catholic Free Poland around Gdańsk and the Highlands, where the last Czech Brethren congregations survive. The narrative begins at the moment when terrorists attack Prague's Masaryk Station. According to official information, the attack is attributed to Christian fundamentalists from the Highlands. The main heroine, Tereza Sundermanová, a PhD student in literary studies and the wife of a high-ranking officer in the European secret services, hastily leaves Brussels and returns to the Highlands to find out what happened to her father, the Christian intellectual Kalandra, who was recently sentenced for violating the Law against Increasing Tension in Society. At the same time, an agent from Free Poland, Mateusz Sienkiewicz, is tasked with uncovering the truth about the Prague attack. Mateusz and Tereza meet in Szczecin, a place where crime and the trafficking of refugees from Europe thrive. I...
