Description
During World War I, a series of unexplained deaths and murders occurred in Britain. "Explosion of munitions in the Northern district: many fatal injuries." One of the workers added horrific details: The faces of the corpses were distorted, as if they had been gnawed by some rodent. However, the roof of the building was completely undamaged. Arthur Machen was born in a small Welsh village that, at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries, was the seat of King Arthur's court and from where the Knights of the Round Table set out to seek the Holy Grail. He was a member of the secret society of English initiates, the Golden Dawn, which included Bram Stoker among others. He worked as an actor, journalist, but mainly as a writer, admired by G. B. Shaw and T. S. Eliot. He is the author of many mystical and eerie novels and stories, among which the most famous and beloved are The Great God Pan (1894), The White Powder (1896), and especially The Inner Light (1894). The novella Horror from 1917 is among his best works.
